SketchUp is the award-winning program that delivers a completely new way to design in 3D. SketchUp Product Overview Image What is SketchUp? SketchUp is a deceptively simple, amazingly powerful tool for creating, viewing, and modifying 3D ideas quickly and easily. SketchUp was developed to combine the elegance and spontaneity of pencil sketching with the speed and flexibility of today's digital media. Developed for the conceptual stages of design, this powerful yet easy-to-learn software allows for quick and easy 3D form creation, the result is an interface that supports a dynamic, creative exploration of 3D form, material and light. SketchUp combines a compact yet robust tool-set with an intelligent guidance system that streamlines the 3D drawing process. 3D for Everyone! Design software has been around for decades and is clearly here to stay. But we think something has been missing—the freedom, flexibility and fun that should go hand-in-hand with the design process. It's our view that while traditional CAD software is necessary for developing detailed drawings, it's simply too complex for most conceptual design work. SketchUp bridges the divide between design utility and fun. As designers ourselves, we created SketchUp as much to satisfy our own wishes as those of our users. We know you've heard it all before: what company doesn't claim that its software is 'a piece of cake to use' or 'the best around?' We're guilty of saying this too. But you don't have to take our word for it—you can try it yourself. Just download a free trial version of SketchUp Pro 5, fire it up and give it a spin. Most people say they're off and running in a few hours. Who uses SketchUp? Fans of SketchUp include everyone from industry giants to industry-giants-in-the-making. As the 'Switzerland' of design software, we're neutral with respect to file formats and work hard to get along with everybody. In keeping with this, we've designed SketchUp to be compatible with most other modeling, image editing, and illustration applications that designers use. From architects to movie and set designers, from game developers to graphic artists, our users rely on SketchUp to help make their design ideas come to life. Don't wait another minute to experience SketchUp Pro 5. Download our free trial version of SketchUp Pro 5 and get 8 full working hours of use. That's more than enough time to fall in love with its remarkably easy interface and unbelievably powerful functionality. Use SketchUp Pro 5 for: * Quick massing studies But nevermind what we think, here's what customers have told us SketchUp is to them: * "Communication tool" |

SketchUp Gets a Facelift The new "Snappy Dialogs" are awfully handy. We've taught all the little settings panels to stick together. There are new ways to manage keyboard shortcuts, and the list of tools and operations that can have shortcuts assigned has been expanded.

For folks who are new to SketchUp, the new Getting Started application includes self-paced tutorials and some links to key areas on our website. There are also terrific enhancements to our online User's Guide including a concepts section, a glossary, and visual cues letting users know when a companion video tutorial is available on the same topic. Cool New Tools * Bring in your survey data and create a surface from contours Click here for instructions to enable the Sandbox tools. Because SketchUp is all about simple yet sophisticated tools, we've made a few key improvements to our existing toolset that give you even more modeling power. You'll want to explore the new capabilities of the Rotate, Walk, Push/Pull, Circle, and Polygon Tools. Non-Photorealistic Rendering * Depth Cued Edges - make lines in the foreground of your model darker than lines in the background, adding that spatial "pop" to your work that you used to do by hand. Component Improvements * The Outliner gives you an entirely new view of your model, exposing complex group and component hierarchies in an easy-to-use outline view. And, there's a ton more! Be sure to check out the many possibilities of the new Component Creation User Interface, the Make Unique option, and Highlight Component Selection. Import & Export Our DWG/DXF Import & Export has received a complete revision on both platforms. Using the latest DWG direct libraries, you get access to more DWG/DXF entities for a smoother translation into and out of SketchUp. After DWG/DXF, our 3DS exporter is probably the most important to our users. As such, we have significantly improved its behavior. Enhancements include: * Large meshes greater than 65K vertices or faces are split into multiple meshes. We hear that OBJ is as important to most folks as 3DS for general data transfer so we've given our OBJ Export full "first-class-citizenship" in SketchUp Pro 5. With our FBX Export (Filmbox), you can easily get your SketchUp models into the graphics pipeline for previz and special effects planning work, working easily with Alias' Motionbuilder and other applications. Softimage|XSI is one of the 900lb gorillas in the entertainment industry, and we're proud to say that SketchUp now has an XSI Export. Our VRML Export has been fully revised too! Among other things, it now supports texture maps on export, especially for "tweaked" textures. To round out the terrain modeling capabilities of the Sandbox Tools, we added in a DEM Import that lets you work from digital terrain models and point-cloud surveys. And, last but certainly not least, we've added a 3DS Import. When we asked for advice on picking the next export format, you overwhelmingly asked for a 3DS import instead. We listened, and here it is. Ruby Scripting Performance and Stability |
